BAY PARK 5TH GRADE FUNDRAISING NEWSLETTER
Dear Parents, Students, Staff and our Bay Park Community:
I would like to introduce you to the 5th Grade Fundraising Committee (“Committee”) – a group that has been formed to help raise money for our graduating 5th Graders this year. As graduating “Seniors” of Bay Park, there are some really fun activities planned for the school year (year-end Barbeque, a Kick-Ball Game, etc.), culminating with graduation ceremonies. As you may know, our PTA allocates $500 to be used for graduating ceremonies and celebrations which covers the cake, punch and decorations at graduation; and another $500 to be used for transportation/busses for a 5th Grade trip. A portion of the funds raised at 50-Cent Thursdays is also given to the 5th Graders. Unfortunately however, the money collected is not enough to cover the cost of a special 5th Grade Trip. The Committee’s goal is to remedy that problem.
The Committee’s plan is to embark upon a discriminating fundraising effort which will yield great benefit to the entire graduating class of 2008. We are planning several events for our 5th Graders during the year that we’d like to let you know about.
Senior Trip: Star of India Educational/Overnight Stay
The Star of India offers a special educational outing and overnight stay for students. Entitled, “The Voyage of Hope,” the students stay on the docked ship and re-live an immigrant voyage to the United States set in 1874. The cost is $64.00 per student. Eight chaperones are allowed at $30.00 each. Teachers are free. The kids will be broken up into “crews” and will be shown how to maneuver a ship, prepare a meal in the Ship’s Galley, and learn how to be a ship’s mate! There are a lot of preparation materials on-line for our Teachers to access and prepare the students for this educational outing. We have booked two dates: Friday, February 1st and Friday February 8th for this historic voyage (one class each time). The time commitment is as follows: the students will arrive at the Ship on Friday at 3:00 p.m., and the students would be picked up on Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. and returned to School. It is a wonderful experience for all the students!
Senior T-Shirts
The fifth grade committee would like to have a t-shirt for each fifth grader to wear on the various outings they will be going on throughout the school year. Not only to easily identify our group, but the comradery the t-shirts will evoke will add a positive feeling for the kids during these events and throughout their final year at Bay Park.
The plan calls for a bright colored t-shirt with a logo/tag line. We will be asking the fifth graders to participate in a logo/design contest with really cool prizes. Participation/rules will be passed out to the kids during the first weeks of school. The winning design will be featured throughout the year for fifth grade events. The shirts will run about $5 each.

Senior Memory Books
How about storing all those wonderful Senior events in a 5th Grade Memory Book? This Memory Book will feature many pictures of all of our 5th Graders throughout the year.
Christine Sykes will be looking into a fun and creative way to store all of these great Senior Memories of our Bay Park 5th Graders!
We anticipate approximately 60 5th Graders in the Fall. Taking the amount of students and the cost of the Star of India trip, the numbers are as follows: 60 x $64.00 = $3,840.00. Just for convenience, let’s round up the figure to $4,000.00. That would be our goal.
The only real hurdle is raising enough funds for all of our 5th Graders to attend the 5th Grade Senior Trip. We have three ideas to meet this goal: The first idea is to have a series of restaurant/dining fundraising events, whereby, each person who brings a flyer to the restaurant that evening and dines, the restaurant will donate a certain percentage of the meal back to our 5th Grade Fundraising Committee.
Our first dining fundraiser will be at Island’s Restaurant on Balboa Avenue, and it is scheduled for Tuesday, October 2, 2007 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. (See the attached flyer—and please mark your calendars!)
Islands will give 20% of all the meals back to us! We will have another Island’s fundraising dinner event in November or January. Please look for a special Raffle to be held during these dining events which will have great prizes to win!!
The second dining fundraiser will be with The Outback Steakhouse in Clairemont Square.
We’re looking for a date in November or December for this lunch fundraiser. The proprietor of The Outback (a wonderful friend to Bay Park) Mark Peterson, has graciously volunteered to open up his restaurant especially for us for this event, and he will donate 50% of the proceeds to our Committee! You won’t want to miss this one!! This will be on a special Saturday from 12 to 2. Keep an eye out for an update on the Outback Lunch fundraiser!!
The second idea is to have a “Read with your Teacher” event at Barnes & Noble Bookstore, where a similar discount would be allocated to our Committee (10%). And, the third idea, is to have an Ice Cream Social in our School Auditorium where 100% of the proceeds will stay with us!
Of course, in order for these fundraisers to be successful, WE WILL NEED ALL OF OUR BAY PARK FAMILIES & FRIENDS TO ATTEND! These are fun nights out with the family, no cooking, and it will really help-out all of our 5th Graders!!
Thank you and we look forward to your support during this year for our Bay Park 5th Graders!
Sincerely,
The 5th Grade Fundraising Committee: Leslie Mason, Julie Wood, Laura Schneider, Christine Sykes, Cari Barrett, Anne Tucker and Jeanette Klem.
